Perhaps all the rocket-scientists will figure out there is a cause and effect relationship to the so-called 'character' that is now reflected in the 'make-up' of what now passes for the 'new Escanaba'.

Businesses, streets, buildings, neighborhoods, restaurants, schools , along with other units of infrastructure and the myriad of other character-building assets of a community are simply a mirror, a reflection of the population that exists in that community.

What you see, where you shop, and where you eat, are simply reflections of what the majority of our populace can afford to spend on taxes, education, government, streets, businesses, and restaurants.

There is only so much money left in the community to spend on these things, and they reflect our disposable income left by what our employers pay us or don’t pay us, for example wait-staff.

It's not rocket science that the so-called ‘finer emporiums’ are non-existent in this community, it is reality 101.

Log Cabin use to have, "use to have:" Crappy Monday, All the crab you could eat for $19.99, I can prove and back it up! That went down hill like a burning ring of fire! Make it now a "Mexican"?" We have "Ferdinand's" Unless yoy know the real thing, you will Never Under Or Know Until You tried it! I just wish you people knew and understood the real thing-then you would understand! Everything around here is "FAKE" "FAKE" FAKE"

I agree with Retireandhappy 100%! It would be really nice if yonkers or anything like that would move into the old menards (another second hand store). I did eat at the cajun place in Marquette, it was awsome!! Just to bad they are not open to the public on weekends. I'd love to get a Popeyes Chicken (Beats KFC 100%) around here! People who never left the area, they have no idea what they are missing. Blimpie subs are also better than any sub around here for sure.

One more thing.... Marquette beats Escanaba in restaurants too. Great Thai restaurants, an Applebee's, Langiappes (sp?) for Cajun food, Red Lobster etc, etc.

If I want to buy something of "quality", I find it necessary to leave the area. At least to Marquette where there's a Kohl's or Younkers & quality products. It's sad that merchants must think we are only deserving of the cheapest products on the market.

There are just two things--big things--that prevent me from shopping locally: quality and service. Local businesses can't compete when it comes to prices or selection, so they must offer local consumers reasons to shop locally. They could offer better quality and superior service, but most don't. In fact, they offer just the opposite, especially in terms of service. Local business owners seem clueless about the importance of superior service. They don't train their employees, they understaff, they don't innovate. This area has, in general, the worst service I've ever encountered.

There is NO WiFi in the mall, contrary to what the sign on the doors say. I was there to shop at Dunhams and thought, "Great, I can check my email too." Very disappointing. I disregard all Wal-Mart bashing... Where else can you you make one stop on the way to camp for a hunting license, beer, food, ammo, some long johns, a TV, and a frying pan?

Personally, McDonalds is not a meal, but at least it is something. I perfrer Walmart over anybody because of their service and they always have more than one lane opened compared to the other retail stores in this area. When it takes you longer to check out than it does to shop, there is something wrong with that picture! And Good Luck on finding them toys at "locally-owned" or "non-chained" business. :)

Well, first I listen to all the shop owners telling me to, "Shop Locally"... and then I do what they do.. I shop Internet, Green Bay, Marquette.. And once in awhile.. I'm caught in Walmart by 'one of those' so heavily against the store.. Oh! they are just in there price comparing.. Right!.. yeah..

News Item, Most Brick and Mortar store fronts are rapidly becoming 'show rooms' for Internet purchases. It's just the way it is.. Look at it here, buy it there..

Escanaba is a horrible town for anything. This town will never change. Buy from local shops? Really? Why so I have to pay more and waste more of my money. Also I would never give a gift from a local shop here, what am I going to give to people an old lady dress and some old 80's sneakers? The local business owners are behind not letting franchises in to this town, because they are on the city board. All they are doing is ruining this town. Another ghost town waiting to happen. Keep it up Escanaba, keep pushing out the youth and keep the corruption going.

Calling McDonald's a "meal" or even "food" is quite a stretch.

There's no doubt that our mall is terrible. I'd MUCH rather shop at a locally-owned, non-chain business than the mall or especially Wal-Mart personally.

Soon we won't even have a Hallmark store in the "mall" (if that's what you want to call it). At least I can shop at Walmart and have a place to get a soda pop or meal if I desire. What does the "food court" have to offer? Like I want to go there just to watch TV! Who ever is running (or ownes) that "mall" needs a reality check! They would rather have empty space than lower the rent (like that space is worth the high price?)

If the Mall doesn't offer what you need, why not check out the smaller individual stores that offer unique gifts.

Yes, the mall is the only place in the area that sells goods that could possibly be given as gifts.
