I hear you camp906, and understand what you are saying. Libraries do more than just hand out books to read.. They have become much, much, much more than that.. In fact, they have those computers you were talking about that 'look up' those Virtual Libraries you mentioned. - A quick change of the subject.. "Who's the guy who put Braille on the buttons of the drive-up ATM and Bank Kiosks?".. Talk about wasted funding eh? Back on track, we pay for a Christmas Tree in Downtown Escanaba, every year.. 'regardless' of the religious affiations living here. And even an 'atheist' pays taxes! Support your Local Library.. any way you can..

Meadismyhome, that's a great opinion. However, unless you actually can back it up, can prove it to be true, you've got nothing. If you can't prove it, then all you're doing is spreading rumors, gossiping. By doing that, you're not contributing anything useful, just like the National Enquirer. If those rumors and gossip you spread can be proven to be false, you're guilty of libel.

I don't see the fairness in taxing everyone for a non-essential service used by a tiny fraction of residents. I could support an online virtual library where one could read a book for a nominal fee. Higher taxes are not what we need. If you want to see your tax burden go here *****://treas-secure.state.mi.us/ptestimator/ptestimator.asp

Finlander, I've got a couple of questions for you. Do you have any data to support the claim that money for the libraries would go into the pockets of politicians, or are you just making a conjecture without having any real evidence to support your claim?

Do you have any data to support the claim that the City of Gladstone owns land in Perkins for no other reason than personal enjoyment by city council members, or are you once again making conjectures without evidence?

Do you know what the definition of town is, or is your level of education so low that you don't understand the very basic levels of local government well enough to know that a county and a city are entirely different things?

Making claims against individuals and groups may make you feel better about yourself, but the burden of proof is on the claimant. I'd suggest that you don't go around bad mouthing people without data to support your claims, because if you don't have any evidence, it's libel.

What you people don't understand is that the money is not going to the library, its going right into the pockets of one corrupt city board members. Did you know Gladstone owns a piece of land in Perkins? For what you may ask? For one of the board members to spend quality time at. Who payed for it? Gladstone Tax Payers. Delta County is a corrupt town.

I believe a community should support its Public Library as well as it's Historical Library, not to mention it's School Library.. A millage isn't too much to ask for such items in a community, as long as... and I mean "As Long As" the money goes directly to those functions and not through some.. 'gutter replacement, garbage pick-up truck, pavement, tree planting, project'.. Nuff!

however, the millage funds should go DIRECTLY to the library, not a county run account which pays what the library charges. Why? As an example, the 911 millage. We are currently taxed to pay for 911 service which costs significantly less than what we pay. Every time the county board has been asked where this money is, they ignore or defer (I have directly asked Dave Moyle and Mary Harrington both who cant answer). Its been speculated that the reason they want to build a jail is to have a reason to spend this money, and incorporate 911 service into the building to justify spending the mystery money. But we did not vote for a new jail! We voted for locally administered 911 service and that is what the money should go for! We ALL need to ask them a simple question: how much does 911 service cost annually, how much is raised via the millage, how much money is left over annually and WHERE THE*****IS IT. I fear a slush fund exists somewhere off the books. CALL AND ASK YOU COMMISSIONER.

The Delta County Board of Commissioners is THE most corrupt political entity in the Upper Peninsula. Their actions regarding their desire to build a new jail without voter consultation and approval is the tip of the iceberg of corruption. Tom Elegreet is the most entrenched political Don that exists in the area, using bullying tactics with other board members, and basically doing whatever he wants. Yet, so few call him out on it. In regard to the library, if they "allow" a vote (as if they control the democratic process) it will be for the best interests of the area. All residents can use the library. Its not unreasonable to have a small county wide millage to fund it.

eskyresident, should we also charge exhorberant rates to anybody who wants to utilize public transportation, doesn't want to die when they get in an accident, or want their kids to get a better education? What about those who cannot afford the surcharges? Should somebody who's poor (as is a large percentage of Delta County, with a per capita income of 63% below the national average) be left to die because they can't pay? No. We all contribute to the betterment of the society, that's how a civilization works.

Also, what's with the quotation marks around round about? It's not an alleged thing. It's not a hypothetical object. It's not a figment of your imagination. It's a real thing that exists.

*******, so vote no if you disagree - that's your right. Point is that one group of 5 (commissioners) should not have the right to tell people what they can and cannot vote on.

Sounds like eskyresident hasn't visited a library in a while. In addition to books, the library has movies and music, books on CD,audiobook and e-book downloads, online language instruction, wired and wireless Internet access, historical archives, and programs for babies, toddlers, children, and adults. Maybe you'll pay a visit when your computer or printer breaks down and you can see for yourself what a library card can do for you.

I definitely think libraries should be on the ballot. I frequent the library often in Gladstone. They have wonderful programs for children, books on tape and cd for adults. Education is the single most important thing we can do for our children and what better place than the public library! Gladstone houses the vast library of information regarding students with Autism. Kudos to our community library!

If libraries are fading out, why are the circulation and usage numbers up for the Gladstone library, year after year? It's because the library is more than internet searches. Many of us still like to read a real book, not an e-reader. Many folks need the internet access. Lots of families enjoy the summer reading programs and special events, which also draw people in to the downtown area. I don't need any more bills either, but I still need the library, and support from traditional surces is drying up fast. This millage is a small price to pay for the services we get.

esky resident, last I looked, this was America. Anything has a right to go to the ballot, were we the people can vote on the matter. Which library has faded out by the way? Last I looked they were everywhere, while useful unbiased information on the internet is what has faded out. cheers

Libraries provide more to our community than encylopedias! Libraries provide educational opportunities for our youth, summer reading programs, book clubs, author visits, and internet access and computers for those who can't afford to have that luxury in their homes. We have forgotten that one of our most important core democratic values is that of the "common good" - we pool our money to provide services that are essential for a thriving community. What business would want to move into our area if our community does not value things such as public parks, libraries, and education?

Internet searches are like cliffsnotes. If you think internet information compares to the vast/detailed information base libraries hold, you're sadly mistaken. A vote has been asked for. A vote should be allowed. The residents of the city should not have to carry the weight for everyone in the county. All of Delta County benefits from the libraries.

With the internet, the libraries are fading out. People are not going to go to the library to spend time looking up something in a book when they can type it in a search engine in the comfort of their own homes off the internet. I never seen a community that likes to give so much money to taxes. Millage for DATA bus, 911, to redo schools. I have enough bills, I don't need anymore. For the people who want to use the library charge them.
