The new site is great except for the automatic audio that turns on. I am in a shared office and have the daily press as my home page. It's oops everytime I connect to the internet. I have to turn the sound down or change my homepage!

The site is ok overall. For me, the major drawback is the auto-starting audio/video files. I realize these are the advertisements that fund the free access to the site, but they are quite annoying. Is it possible to change these to user-activated applications?

I don't like the new site! The old one was so clear and easy to read! Why change a good thing?

It's still a "busy" site and that has nothing to do with resolution. Reading with blinking objects is distracting plain and simple. Incidently, a good website is built to work well with all browsers and screen resolutions. This site was built a little too wide to begin with and that is where the problem comes in with people needing to scroll around, *if that indeed is the case" I am on a higher resolution. The site is just not suiting my taste and that's my opnion. I prefer a less cluttered site. But for those of you who like it, thats great!

It does look good. I note a lot of the dislike comments are because the site resolution is 1024 x 768 and their monitors are set to 800 x 600 or lower, which would require a lot of scrolling to read and the "flash" would be much larger. When viewed at the proper resolution it's very easy to navigate.

Woweeeee, this new layout hurts my eyes!!

I think the new software is great, the website loads faster than ever. However I believe that the three column layout is too much on the front page for some people. Two columns would be better for those who have difficulty with their vision.

People were asked to offer their comments.

This is a purchased off-the-shelf web site and can be modified in a variety of ways. Generally the users (us) are going to find the problems first.

I just finished up a class on web site engineering and usability. The main gist is color, visuals and navigation. For example, the flashing Subscribe Now can be slowed down or changed to a peel away for less distraction. They can also fit more on a page such as more than one letter to editor on a page. They can actually make the online front page look like a printed front page. A web site by nature is supposed to attract and keep people coming back. I don't think anyone here is implying change is bad but this canned system made it harder to navigate. If you ever get any ****her than dailypress**** and into the webosphere you will see this newspaper site is about 10 years behind. For my part, the old one had navigation problems as well and the content of local news was limited.

For all you that are bashing the new site, this is for you. The reason the website looks identical to the "Mining Journal" and all the other is because its owned by the same company. Its an online newspaper, if you don't like it then subscribe to the paper one. They are just keeping up with technology and trying to improve themselves. I for one, like the site. Who cares if its to flashy, all sites are these days. Everyone needs to advertise somehow. I think the improvement of this site is great, the old one was a little boring. I say "Keep up the good work".

the old site was much easier to get around. I actually like the set up that the Mining Journal has because you can look at a "real"Front Page and its much easier to navigate. I'd also like to point out that the content wasn't accurate either, my grams called me with a story that was front page today in her Daily Press and I can not find it anywhere on the on-line paper.

Change is good but this new site lacks flow, especially when accessing items. For example; the LTE's for the day should be on one page and people can roll down the page. Having to click in and out is distracting and a waste of time. Same goes for the obits. At the very least, the obit views should be by week, not by day. Less will get read on this site if you make it difficult and time consuming for people to navigate to local news.

There is "modern" and then there is "busy" This site is annoying. I am trying to give it a chance but everytime I do, I become frustrated with the flashing banner ads and pop up boxes. News does not need to be flashy, it need to be direct and to the point without all the fluff and frills following you around the site! Again I ask, why must we copy the Mining Journal website? Can we not be exclusive to a Daily Press site?

Yes. While I agree that the site is somewhat "flashy", so was the old one. The new site is more "Modern". I say give it a chance.

I can tell there was some thought put into this new website, however; I do have to agree with the people I'm not sure if I like it. It would be better if everything was on one screen. I don't like having to scroll from left to right. Also the wedding/engagement section is not right. When you click on wedding you get nothing because they are all under engagement. Please fix! And as far as all the blinking things, they do need to dim that down a little. But everybody knows that people in Escanaba don't like change, they would rather be 10 years behind the rest of society. Please fix some of the problems that people are complaining about and I think the new site will be great. p.s. How come the births are not listed on-line?

Wow, what a major letdown! The old site was easy to navigate, easy to read and user friendly. This is ridiculous and a step backward. Let's vote the "designers" off the island and go back to what was much more practical. Was the goal to make your site as annoying as some of the other local papers? What was going through the minds of those in charge when they moved it was determined best practice to open the page on the left vs the center? The list of irritants w/this site goes on and on. Suffice it to say, I won't bother returning.

Well, it seems universal so far..Looks like it needs more work, or maybe go back to what the readers liked.

Your website is chock full of annoying, flashing ads, and basically isn't user-friendly. Looks too much like other newspaper websites, not unique for a paper who "prides" itself about local flavor. A definite step backwards and downwards!

Way too much going on. I can't find anything. I know change takes time to get used to but this is not user friendly at all. I will not visit the site if it stays like this.

Before commenting, I took a good look around the new site and am dissapoiinted with the following: *difficult to navigate *too busy with flashing objects *opens on the left *unable to see the headers of stories *font's too small when reading the story Is there any chance of making this new site more user friendly? Hopefully, our input will be taken into consideration.

Thanks

I like the fact you tried to update the site, but its way to cluttered. I'm not from the area but do read news on your site. One of my local papers has a great looking website, it has a much nicer flow. take a look at the site below & please take some pointers before you redo your site again. ***********gazettextra****/

I can find what I need from the new site but I liked it better when it opened up in the middle of the web page instead of on the left. The biggest distraction is the constant blinking of the ads. The D. Press sign, the CU click here sign, and the AP video constantly blinking is enough to drive one nuts. Please stop.

I love the new site. The colors are purty and it's got blinky things.
