County board not "shopping locally".

I would like everyone in Delta County to know that when we are being asked to "Shop locally" during the holiday season, that our own county board dos'nt even abide by this. They just voted to hire an "out of state" management service company to provid catering for the Delta County Jail. This means the local service was dropped, without oppurtunity to rebid the contract. Nor was anyone else from the area allowed to bid on the contract. I wish the Daily press would of provided more information in their front page article concerning this issue. By the way the 40,000 dollars they are going to save, isn't going to happen. If so I would like to know how. Unlike other counties such as Dickenson the previous kitchen providers were not county employees and from what I hear, what took two people to do may now take three. I am sure this will reflect in the new contract price some where down the line.

I don't know much about the plan to 'cater' the jail. Perhaps there is a State incentive to do so.. A program that reads something like, "The State of Michigan will give your City 5 bucks for every meal you order from 'out of town', thus helping the economy there as well as your City. Our Civic leadership is always looking for ways into the State coffers.. perhaps this is yet, another..

As for 'Shop Locally'.. hmmm, well even the shop owners that like that slogan find themselves 'shopping anywhere but locally' - They denounce shopping at Walmart, but wait.. what about all the local people who owe their jobs to Walmart?!! They could care less of course.. Interested in their own business profits - Are they creating a place to work?.. Heck no!.. I shop where my buck goes the furthest.. psst! So do the Shop Owners.

I hate the "Shop Locally" campaign. In all honesty very few of our local shops deserve what little money I have. In this day and age why are buisnesses still open from only 9-5 in retail? I don't get home from work until 5pm so how am I supposed to shop at your store? The weekends? This is the problem because it's not just saving a buck or two to shop someplace else its also being ABLE TO SHOP period!

It's unfortunate that Cake Cera Cera is closed or closing. However when I needed a cake for my sons birthday I had NO opportunity to talk with them face to face or see what they had available because they were not open after 4pm (or somewhere around that time). Luckily my wife doesn't work or we wouldn't have been able to purchase anything from that place!
