Century-old kit boat to return to Michigan

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — An antique boat is returning to Bay City after nearly a century out of port.

MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/1rLhKLF ) the Amycita is being donated to the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society this week. It's a knock-down frame kit boat, or a build-it-yourself package.

Frederick Leslie Ransome purchased the kit in 1915 from Bay City's Defoe Boat and Motor Works. He launched the boat in 1919.

Ransome's great-grandson Eric Baxter has it now. He says it's one of the last of its kind in the world.

The society's president says the acquisition is a chance to save a piece of history that might otherwise be lost.

The boat is scheduled to leave North Carolina by truck Wednesday and arrive late Thursday. The society is paying about $7,000 on transportation and an exhibit.
