MANISTIQUE - Mary E. Krusic, 80, of 707N Woodland Drive, Manistique, Mich., passed away on June 28, 2014, following a brief illness at Marquette General Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born May 22, 1934, in Newberry, Mich., the daughter of Romeo "Shallow" and Clara (Hudson) Lawrence. She attended schools in Germfask and Sault Ste. Marie, MI and was a graduate of Sault Loretto High School.
On June 14, 1958, the former Mary E. Lawrence married Raymond L. Krusic in Germfask. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique. Ray preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1983.
Mary was a woman of deep faith. She was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Parish and volunteered many hours at the school and church. She served as a member of the St. Anne's Altar Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and supported missions in third world countries.
Athletics was a favorite pastime for Mary. She loved playing sports as a child. During her college years she was recruited to play for the "Racine Belles" women's professional baseball team, however, the leagues were dissolved just prior to her start. She volunteered as a softball and basketball coach and enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and golf. In recent years, she spent her evenings supporting the Emerald sports' teams and watching the Detroit Tigers and Pistons.
She loved photography and videotaping - especially nature, wildlife, family, and sports. She has spent countless hours volunteering her time and services to record Manistique area athletic and community events.
Family was most important to Mary. She cherished the time she was able to spend with her children, grandkids, and great-grandkids.
Mary is survived by her children, Donna (Richard) Winkel of Manistique, Karen (Edward) Marietti of Manistique, Jacquelyn (Roy) Burns of Manistique, Christine (the late William) Olesak of Gladstone, Nancy Krusic of Manistique, and John (Michelle) Krusic of Manistique; grandchildren, Laura (Jon) Carlson, David (Ashley) Winkel, Jenny (Joel) Norton, Jeff (Alison) Jenerou, Calvin "C.J." Mary believed strongly in giving to others. The family is respectfully honoring Mary's request to send donations to her "adopted son" Fr. Yohannes Hagos in Ethiopia. Memorial donations for this may be directed to Fr. Yohannes through a donation to the family (c/o Donna Winkel). Other donations may be directed to the charity of your choice.
