ESCANABA - Mildred Dolly Bartol, 88, of Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at her daughter's home in Escanaba, surrounded by her family.
Mildred was born July 26, 1925, in Wells, Mich., the daughter of Joseph and Roza (Stoycic) Vuksan. She graduated from the Escanaba High School on June 11, 1942, and from the St. Francis School of Nursing in Peoria, Ill., on Sept. 18, 1946. She received her RN designation in Dec. 15, 1948. Mildred worked as a registered nurse for the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba for 40 years.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Bartol in Wells on Nov. 30, 1946. Mildred was a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wells, Garden Club, YMCA, St. Francis Retirees, Croatian Fraternal Union, Michigan Nurses Association and the Traunik Slovenian Club. She was also an avid gardener and loved sewing and dancing.

Mildred is survived by two sons, Tom (Sue) Bartol of Jonesville, Mich., and Jerry (Gerri) Bartol of Bark River; two daughters, Fran (Daryl) Prey of Escanaba and Mary (Hobie) Ahrens of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren, Tom (Amy) Bartol, Brian (Sherry) Bartol, Benjamin (Jessica) Bartol, Nathan (Shelly) Prey, Matthew (Amy) Prey, Casey (Nic) Bond, Tony (Amber) Bartol, Bridget (Nick) Naser; great-grandchildren, Max, Jack, Shaylin, Jacob, Julia, Layla, Cecilia, Spencer, Adam, Jacob, Vincent, Graysen, Kennidie, Brielle and Nora; sister, Dora (Chet) Fronczak of Chicago, Ill.; brothers-in-law, Joseph Majestic of Rapid River and Earl McClain of Finley, Ill.; sister-in-law, Eileen Vuksan of Gladstone and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers, Mike, Steven, Joseph, John and Tony and three sisters, Anne Debelak, Mary McClain and Bertha "Boots" Majestic.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Escanaba with Rev. Fr. Rick Courier officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Mildred will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Mildred's name may be directed to the family to be used for a nursing scholarship to be established by the family.
