ARNOLD - Steven M. Hurkman Sr., 61, of 236 Co Rd SK, Arnold, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his home. He was born on Aug. 28, 1952, in Escanaba and was the son of James and Genevieve (Jensen) Hurkmans Sr. Steve attended school in Gwinn and was a graduate of Gwinn High School. He was a lifelong resident of Arnold.
Steve "Hurky" Hurkman was known by most for his sense of humor. He was a very talented artist. Throughout his life he drew pictures and created hand-crafted specialty wood products. He also had a great knack for operating equipment, which he did for most of his life.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed camping with Jack and then later in life with Sue.

His greatest loves and best friends were his family. The joy and laughter spent with his grandchildren were his most cherished moments.
Through the "Gift of Life," Steve received a heart transplant in 2005 that gave him the opportunity to meet and love all of his grandchildren. Our special thanks go out to all of the caregivers Steve has had in Gwinn, Marquette, Escanaba and Madison.
He is survived by: sons, Steven (Misha) Hurkman Jr. of Escanaba and Jason (Beth) Hurkman of Escanaba; daughter, Kristina Hurkman of Escanaba; grandchildren, Jayden, Savannah, Blake, Deanna, Dayton, Reagan, Ashlyn, Mason, Dredyn and Malachi; sister, Tina (Roger) Hiironen of Northland; brother, Dale (Carol) Jensen of Ralph; stepmother, Bonnie Hurkmans of Marquette; stepsisters, Pam and Suzi; stepbrothers, Jim (Brenda) Owens and Danny Owens; special friend, Sue Zorza; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Steve was preceded in death by: his parents, brothers, James Jr. and Randy; infant sister, Sharon; grandparents; stepsister, Kathy Tyni; and best friend Jack "Jr." Reynolds.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, March 29, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba from 10 a.m. to noon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Steven M. Hurkman will follow at noon with Father Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will be served at St. Anne Catholic Church in the fellowship hall at the conclusion of the funeral service.
