FORD RIVER - Ethel Viola Shilney, 85, of Ford River, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1929, in Detroit, the daughter of the late Olof and Ida (Jonsson) Satterlund. On Nov. 29, 1952, she married the late Richard Shilney in Rochester, Mich.
She received her Registered Nursing degree from Henry Ford School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Education in 1958 at Michigan State University.

Ethel proudly served from Sept. 21, 1951 to Feb. 20, 1953 in the U.S. Navy with rank Lt. J.G. as a nurse at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, where she also met her husband. She was an active member in the Ford River Lioness Club, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Ladies Aid and was loved for her handcrafting abilities. Ethel was a substitute teacher for many years locally and enjoyed flowers and gardening.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Marc) Carter and Diane Bonamy; one brother, Lawrence Satterlund; four grandchildren, Nicole and Christina Carter, Paul Bonamy and Jessica (Andrew) Field; as well as nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Eleanor Jackson; and her beloved cat, Minnie.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hyde with Delta County Veterans Council Rites at 2:45 p.m.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Ethel Shilney will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the church with Pastor Ronald Zindler officiating. A luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Ford River West Cemetery in the spring.
