GLADSTONE - February is the beginning of the Friends of the Gladstone Library Annual Membership Drive. The purpose of the Friends is to maintain a group of volunteers who share a belief that their library is a valuable asset to their community.
Members are asked to consider renewing their membership or becoming a new member/friend. Annual dues are $5 for an adult, $10 for a family and $25 for a patron. Individuals can become a Lifetime Member for $150. Membership applications are available at the library at 300 South 10th Street, Gladstone.
Over the years, the Friends' fund-raising activities have provided equipment upgrades, expanded resources such as the purchase of books, public outreach, and most recently, help with operating expenses.
The Learning Tree sculpture at the entrance of the Gladstone Public Library is adorned with bronze, silver and gold leaves engraved with the names of library supporters. Engraved stones around the base of the tree indicates the names of donors who have contributed $1,000 or more.
The 2014 events include the 22nd Annual Candlelight Dinner, which will be held on Saturday, April 26, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone; the Summer Reading Program; Used Books Sale on June 13 and 14; a Summer Card Party, June 19; a Fall Card Party on Nov. 13, and Children's Seasonal Story Hours.
The Learning Tree, located near the front entrance to the libary, is an oak sculpture which was funded by the Friends of the Gladstone Library. The Learning Tree provides a unique opportunity to support the Gladstone School & Public Library through the purchase of engraved leaves of bronze ($200-$399), silver ($400-$599), or gold ($600-$999).
Members may also wish to have a stone engraved and placed under the tree ($1,000 or more). The leaf or stone may be engraved for the donor or as a memorial or an honorarium providing lasting recognition.
Learning Tree brochures are available at the Library.
