Injuries in multi-vehicle crash

GARDEN CORNERS - White-out conditions on U.S. 2 at Garden Corners led to a 16-vehicle crash that sent seven people to area hospitals Friday morning.

Shortly after 10 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Gladstone and St. Ignace posts and Delta County Sheriff's Department deputies were dispatched to the crash on U.S. 2 just west of County Road 183 at Garden Corners.

While enroute, officers were advised by fire personnel at the scene that other vehicles were colliding with ones that had already crashed.

Blowing snow at the crash scene created white-out conditions with zero visibility, which helped contribute to the pile up. In total, the conditions led three tractor trailers and at least 13 passenger cars to be involved in the accident.

Officers believe the eastbound portion of the crash started when a van rear-ended a tractor trailer and spun out in the lane of travel before being hit by another eastbound vehicle. As the occupants of the van were attempting to exit the vehicle, it was hit by a second tractor trailer, throwing occupants into the air and causing several injuries.

Other vehicles proceeded to collide with the vehicles in the eastbound lane or went into the snow bank to avoid collision.

In the westbound lane at the same location, three trucks were stopped in the roadway. A westbound tractor trailer collided with the last truck pushing it into the snow bank and causing a series of collisions.

At least seven people were treated for injuries at OSF St. Francis, Schoolcraft Memorial and Marquette General hospitals. Some of the injuries were severe, however none appeared to be life-threatening.

U.S. 2 from Highway 13 to M-183 .25 Road was closed for roughly six hours while the scene was cleared.

Assisting at the scene of the accident were Rampart EMS, Tri-Star EMS, Manistique EMS, Nahma Township Fire, Garden Fire, Inwood Township Fire, Thompson Township Fire, Gene's Towing, Bay de Noc Towing, Renze Towing and TKL Towing.
