ESCANABA - The vacancy left on the Escanaba Area Public Schools Board of Education following the resignation of one of its members has been filled.

Kathleen Jensen of Escanaba was chosen Wednesday night by the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District Board to fill the remaining one-year term of former board member Nicole Dewar-Braun, who resigned from her position in December.

In January, the Escanaba School Board interviewed four candidates to fill the vacancy, narrowing it down to Jensen and Dean Peterson; however, they could not come to a consensus on who should fill the position, resulting in a deadlock 3-3 vote with Board President Cathy Wilson, Vice President Marilyn Noble and Secretary Natalie Clouse in favor of Jensen's appointment, while Board Treasurer Jed Gagnier and trustees Will Carne and Jim Hermans voted in favor of Peterson.

Because the board had not been able to fill the vacancy, it came before the ISD Board Wednesday night, where Jensen was chosen to represent the district.

Jensen said she looks forward to serving Escanaba Area Public Schools.

"I'm excited and grateful and honored to be selected," she commented Thursday afternoon. "I look forward to serving Escanaba in a new way. I look forward to watching out for the needs of our children while at the same time balancing the concerns of the taxpayers."

School Board President Cathy Wilson welcomed Jensen to her new position.

"We're just excited to have our new member, and of course very excited about the quality of all the candidates that came out," she said. "I know it was a difficult decision for the ISD Board as well."

The Escanaba School Board's next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Escanaba Upper Elementary School Courtyard Room.
