An icy spectacle

Visitors to the home of Kalvin and Jeanne McCoy in the Hyde area have a unique view this year thanks in part to the frigid temperatures — a huge ice tower that stands over 24 feet tall in the front yard. Kalvin, pictured above, has been experimenting with building ice towers for about four years now, but the extreme cold this year led to the biggest and best one yet. Kalvin built the tower using a garden hose hung over the branch of a large tree and by spraying water from a nozzle set on mist. He started the project by building up ice on a wooden frame, and as the ice continued to build he pulled the hose higher off the ground until it reached the top of the branch. During one of the coldest days, the tower grew nearly three feet in a 24-hour period. It took about one month to complete the project. Now, Kalvin and his family members have bets as to how long the tower will last before melting away.
