Mackinac Bridge, portion of U.S. 2 closed

January 24, 2014
Daily Press

ST. IGNACE - Due to weather conditions, the Mackinac Bridge and U.S. 2 from I-75 in St. Ignace to M-77 have been closed.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, U.S. 2 was experiencing high winds, heavy snow and complete white-out conditions this morning, prompting the closure of that portion of U.S. 2 at approximately 10 a.m.

The Mackinac Bridge also closed to traffic around 11:45 a.m.

MDOT says road crews were pulled off the route due to poor visibility and crews being unable to keep up with the blowing snow.

Due to the closure, westbound traffic on U.S. 2 is being detoured on I-75 to M-123 to M-28 to M-77 and eastbound traffic is being detoured along the same route in reverse (M-77, M-28, M-123, I-75).

Area law enforcement agencies have been notified and are involved in the closure.
