ESCANABA - Community Action Agency's 2014 Walk for Warmth campaign is in full swing with the walks scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, in Menominee, Escanaba and Manistique.
The fund-raiser helps residents in Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft counties with heating assistance. Individuals, businesses, youth groups and service clubs are encouraged to participate.
"We appreciate the strong support the walks have received over the years. Since the first walk we have raised $670,000 in the three counties. Every dollar raised is used for direct services and is used in the county where the money is raised," said Cathy Pearson, CAA executive assistant.
Pearson said Mother Nature has provided a stinging reminder this winter how much help is needed with the record-breaking lows felt in our region earlier this month and returning again this week.
"It's not just home heating. Don't forget about the increased costs of other basic necessities. It all adds up. Many of our neighbors could use a helping hand to get them through a month or so of heating help," she said.
Residents not able to take part in the walks may support the events by sending in a donation or by purchasing a brat in Escanaba or Menominee. Brat sales take place before the Walk for Warmth in Menominee and Escanaba and are a fun and tasty way to increase public awareness.
In Escanaba, the walk will begin at 10 a.m. EDT at the Elks Lodge and proceed down Ludington Street to 14th Street and end with a return trip to the Elks. In Menominee, the walk will begin at 10 a.m. CDT at the Senior Center and proceed down 10th Avenue to Spies Public Library and end with a return trip to the Senior Center. The Schoolcraft event will launch at 9 a.m. EDT the Manistique Senior Center, 101 Main St.
