ISD to determine who will fill school board vacancy

ESCANABA - The Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District (DSISD) Board will make the final determination of who will fill a vacancy on the Escanaba School Board early next month.

The board interviewed four candidates Monday to fill the remaining one-year term of former board member Nicole Dewar-Braun, who resigned from her position last month.

Board members narrowed it down to two candidates, Kathleen Jensen and Dean Peterson; however, the board could not come to a consensus on who would fill the position, resulting in a deadlock 3-3 vote with Board President Cathy Wilson, Vice President Marilyn Noble and Secretary Natalie Clouse in favor of Jensen's appointment, while Board Treasurer Jed Gagnier and trustees Will Carne and Jim Hermans voted in favor of Peterson.

Once a vacancy exists on the school board, the board has 30 calendar days to fill it, according to Escanaba Superintendent Michele Lemire.

However, if the board is unable to do so, the vacancy is filled by the ISD. The ISD then has 30 days from the point in time they are notified about the vacancy to fill the position.

Lemire said the DSISD Board will make the decision on Feb. 5 at 4:45 p.m. in the DSISD Board Room, prior to the County School Board dinner.

Escanaba Area Public Schools has provided the ISD with letters of interest from both candidates; the district's technology director will also burn a recording of their interviews onto a CD and make copies for each board member.

"The expectation is they will listen to the interviews and read the letters of interest in advance prior to their board meeting," said Lemire, noting the new trustee who is selected by the ISD will be ready for the Feb. 18 board meeting.
