Man to be sentenced in strangulation case

ESCANABA - An Escanaba man is scheduled to be sentenced next month on one count of attempted assault by strangulation.

Kent Wesley King, 35, entered a no contest plea to the felony in Delta County Circuit Court last week. The charge carries a maximum sentencing of five years in prison. Sentencing is set for Feb. 19

In exchange for the plea, the court dismissed one count of assault by strangulation and one count of domestic violence.

Because King pleaded no contest, the defendant does not have to explain what happened. Instead, the judge can use information in the police report and the district court preliminary examination to assist in determining what occurred for sentencing purposes.

The incident involved the choking of a female victim in Escanaba on Oct. 10, 2013, said Judge Stephen Davis referring to the police report.

King remains lodged in the Delta County Jail.
