HANCOCK - Harry Edgar Barr, 74, Hancock and longtime resident of Gladstone and Rapid River, died of heart failure on Monday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2014, with his daughter at his side at Portage Health.
He was born Nov. 24, 1939, in Chicago, Ill., the youngest son of Charles and Pearl (Gishpert) Barr. He attended York Community High School in Elmhurst, Ill., and earned his GED in 1991 from the state of Michigan. He married Patricia Moreau on March 10, 1971, and she preceded him in death from cancer on June 18, 1981, in San Bernardino, Calif., leaving him to care for their 9-year-old daughter on his own.
He was employed in construction, health care, and security for many years. He enjoyed puzzles, games, and socializing, especially at Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly events. He loved being around dogs and horses, but his greatest joy came from watching his daughter succeed in school and career.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, and his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, John Melvin and Robert.

The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to the staff at Houghton County Medical Care Facility and Portage Health for their outstanding care and kindness.
Arrangements are in the care of the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home of Hancock.
