MENOMINEE - Investigation continues into a head-on crash that claimed the lives of both motorists in Harris Township earlier this week, according to the Menominee County Sheriff's Department.

Lee "Dobbs" James Polfus, 29, of Escanaba, and Curtis Joel Grondin, 35, of Wilson, both died in the head-on collision which occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday on County Road 557. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the sheriff's department, Polfus was driving a minivan south on County Road 557 when it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and struck Grondin's northbound pickup truck. The accident occurred about five miles south of U.S. 2 & 41.

A small white dog found alive in Grondin's pickup truck was transported by a sheriff's deputy to a veterinarian in Wilson, according to officials who did not know the condition of the animal.

Alcohol, speed and slippery road conditions appear to be contributing factors in the crash, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

The roadway, which was covered with snow and ice, was closed to traffic for five hours during the extrication and crash scene investigation.

An accident investigator from the Michigan State Police Post in Gladstone is assisting the sheriff's department in investigating the accident.

Other agencies responding to the emergency included the Menominee County medical examiner, Hannahville Police Department, Hermansville Rescue Emergency Medical Services, Rampart Paramedics EMS, Harris Township Fire Department, Gourley Township Fire Department, Menominee County Victim Services Unit, and Menominee County Chaplain Corps.

Funeral arrangements for Polfus and Grondin are incomplete at this time and will be announced by the Allo Coolman Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Spalding.
