ESCANABA - Monetary donations are being sought for the annual Shop With a Cop program, which allows needy children a fun opportunity to go shopping for Christmas presents with a police officer from Delta County.

Shop With a Cop is organized by the Delta County Sheriff's Department in cooperation with officers from Escanaba Public Safety, Gladstone Public Safety and the Hannahville Police Department.

Some law enforcement staff and spouses of officers also participate in the annual event, which benefits children in two ways, explained Todd Tardiff, a Delta County Sheriff's Department deputy.

Donations provide money for the kids to shop for holiday gifts for themselves or family members.

In addition, the young participants experience a positive experience with local police who help each child shop for presents, noted Tardiff.

Grade school-age children are involved in the program made possible by generous donations from throughout the community, he said.

This year's shopping day is scheduled for Dec. 7, at Walmart in Escanaba, where employees will wrap the youngsters' gifts. McDonald's provides lunch for the kids. Santa also plans to visit the children.

Organizations, businesses or individuals who want to make a donation to the "Shop with a Cop" program can drop off or mail contributions to the Delta County Sheriff's Department at 111 N. 3rd St., Escanaba, MI. 49829.

Delta County Sheriff Gary Ballweg said monetary donations to Shop With a Cop are greatly appreciated and will help brighten the holiday for needy children in Delta County.

"Many of these children are selfless, buying gifts for family members and thinking about themselves last," commented Ballweg.
