Ernest H. 'Ernie' Belanger

ESCANABA - Ernest H. "Ernie" Belanger, 85, of 1919 24th Ave. S., Escanaba, passed away on Sunday morning, Oct. 13, 2013, at his home.

He was born on May 24, 1928 in Escanaba, son of Joseph and Agnes (Seymour) Belanger. Ernie graduated from Escanaba High School and attended Northern Michigan College earning a degree in secondary education.

Ernie served in the army from 1950 to 1952 in Fort Sheridan, Fort Leonard Wood, Camp Beale, Korea, and Camp McCoy before his honorable discharge. He earned a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Camp Stars and a UN Service Medal.

On Jan. 30, 1954, Ernest married Noreen Ann Guay at St. Anne's Church in Escanaba.

Ernie was a teacher at the Escanaba High School for 26 1/2 years, P & H Company for six years and Rapid River High School for two years.

He was a member of St. Anne's Church, the American Legion, Eskymo Fan Club, Quarterback Club, Michigan Public Schools Retired Teachers Association, the Escanaba Hawks Hockey Team of 1947 and 1948, and a life member of Elks Lodge 354. He enjoyed playing pool, bowling, and especially enjoyed going to the grandchildren's sporting events.

He is survived by his beautiful and caring wife of 59 years, Noreen and his two sons who he was extremely proud of, Bruce Joseph and Brent David (Sara). Ernie enjoyed every minute with his delightful grandchildren, Brandon Michael and Brianna Jean.

Gone before were his parents and five brothers, Richard, Donald, Roy, Daniel, and Francis.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 3 p.m. and Elks Lodge 354 memorial service will be at 4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Anne's Church with Rev. Francis DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to OSF Hospice.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Belanger family.
