Volunteers make mark on community

October 11, 2013
Daily Press

Too often, the work of volunteers goes unnoticed. Their efforts are all around us. The results of their work can be seen in area schools, parks, agencies that help the less fortunate and countless other areas to numerous to mention.

Thursday night, the Daily Press honored two of those volunteers. The Daily Press has a program called Volunteer of the Month. Throughout the year, area volunteers are recognized with a story and photo on the front page of this newspaper. They are nominated by members of the community. From the group of volunteers, a Volunteer of the Year is selected. That volunteer is honored with an award at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.

Last night, the Daily Press honored Bill and Janet LaMarch with this award. The LaMarchs, like many other residents, make a difference in our community through their efforts to help others. They are involved with numerous groups including the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans, VFW, American Legion, Vietnam Vets, U.P. Whitetails Association, Wildlife Unlimited and the Elks.

The work that is closest to their hearts, however, involves making the lives of area children better. Through their work in the Toys for Tots program, they help make sure less fortunate children have toys at Christmas. Just last year 2,159 local children had toys under the tree at Christmas, thanks to the LaMarchs and the other Toys for Tots volunteers.

Through their work in the Elks' Dictionary Project, they also help provide dictionaries to third grade students throughout the area each year. Last year, 600 children in the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District received dictionaries.

The LaMarchs truly deserve this honor. So do other deserving volunteers in the community. The Daily Press is continuing the Volunteer of the Month program. If you know of a deserving volunteer, we would like to hear from you.

To nominate an area resident as the Daily Press Volunteer of the Month, send your nomination to Volunteer of the Month, c/o The Daily Press, 600 Ludington St., Escanaba MI 49829. Nominations can also be submitted via the Daily Press virtual newsroom by visiting the Daily Press website, www.dailypress.net, and clicking on Submit News. Please include detailed information on the person's volunteer history and why you think they should be a Volunteer of the Month.

With your help, we can give area volunteers the recognition they deserve.
