Drowning probably killed man found in Lake Superior

October 8, 2013
Associated Press

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP (AP) - Authorities in Keweenaw County say drowning is the apparent cause of death of a 48-year-old camper from suburban Detroit whose body was pulled from Lake Superior.

The Keweenaw County sheriff's department says Paul F. Lempke of Eastpointe disappeared about 11 p.m. Thursday from the Kauppi Resort and Campground. It's in Sherman Township, about 20 miles east-northeast of Houghton. Authorities say they recovered his body Friday afternoon. They say Lempke was camping with a friend and was last seen walking along a break wall near the docks at the resort.

Sheriff Ron Lahti tells The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton that an autopsy shows Lempke probably drowned, but a final report on the cause of death is upcoming.
