Now's the time to thank Mollie Larsen for her 10 years of solid service as executive director of the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center.
She has provided administrative savvy, wide experience and keen intelligence to lead the busy Center into the heart of the community for the benefit of all. She has helped the Bonifas continue growing into a "fun place," especially with the presence of Players de Noc and other valuable affiliates. Inside that handsome building lives a well-run comprehensive organization with significant cultural and educational offerings - and a spirit all its own.
Visitors need only to walk inside the big doors at 700 1st Ave. S. to hear delighted squeals of children in a workshop around big tables. They are learning that the arts can entertain and teach at the same time...Or the murmuring of a club group in the Gallery enjoying exciting colors, shapes and memories... Or even the chattering of the talented staff under Mollie's direction as they hammer out plans, grant applications, budgets, news releases and the Lively Arts page for the Daily Press full of stories about the latest season of cabarets, plays, concerts and classes.
Although the board of directors, elected by the Center's membership, provides general direction and support for the Bonifas, the executive director puts it all together and makes it work. Mollie and her colleagues have empowered the Arts Center to work beautifully by cooperating with many organizations, students and families for the whole community's benefit.
Let's hope the versatile Bonifas Arts Center continues to develop in the spirit of "the humanities" here in the Upper Peninsula - and beyond.
