ESCANABA - A 67-year-old Gladstone man who sexually abused a Gladstone girl was sentenced to prison during a hearing in Delta County Circuit Court Monday.

Joseph Gordon Grenier Jr. appeared before Circuit Court Judge Stephen Davis who ordered the defendant to spend three years to up to 15 years in prison on one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Grenier was also sentenced to 12 months imprisonment on one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a high-court misdemeanor. The two sentences are to be served concurrently.

Last month, Grenier pleaded no contest to second-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with incidents involving a girl under the age of 13 in 2012 in Gladstone.

He also pleaded no contest to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving the same victim between the ages of 13-16 in 2012 in Gladstone.

Prior to sentencing Monday, Assistant Prosecutor Philip Strom commented, "This defendant's behavior is highly concerning, highly troubling... and involves long-term sexual conduct with young girls."

Defense attorney John MA Bergman said his client admitted he had inappropriate contact with the victim.

Grenier declined to make a statement prior to sentencing. While Judge Davis was commenting the law has very strict consequences for his behavior, Grenier said, "I did wrong."

In addition to the prison terms, Grenier was assessed $266 in fines and costs on both counts. He was given credit for 140 days served in the county jail.

He was ordered to have no contact with minors, including the victim. He must also register as a sex offender and be monitored electronically for life.

In exchange for the above two pleas made last month, a separate second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge involving an 11-year-old girl in 2011-12 was dismissed by the court.

Grenier was arrested May 6 by Gladstone Public Safety then lodged in the county jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.
