Eskymos make impact on second UPSSA poll

A key Week 4 upset caused some minor shakeup in the second UPSSA football poll of the season.

A 3-0 Marquette Redmen team that had already beaten two common opponents that Escanaba had lost to, came into town Friday night and left on the wrong (or right for Escanaba) end of a 35-14 game. The loss dropped Marquette (3-1) out of the poll and West Iron County took advantage. The Wykons (4-0) made their debut at No. 5 after thoroughly handling Ironwood 49-0, Friday night. This week, West Iron travels to a much improved Houghton (3-1) team. The Gremlins clipped Calumet (0-4) 20-14, Friday.

No. 4 Negaunee (4-0) moved up and the remainder of the Big Five poll stayed the same. That could change this week though.

Two key matchups are on tap for Week 5. Big Five schools, No. 1 Menominee (4-0) is set to host No. 3 Kingsford (4-0) in what should be a barnburner. Both schools won handily in Week 4, Menominee thrashing Gladstone 56-6 and Kingsford taking care of Rhinelander, Wis. 49-13.

In the Little Five poll, No. 3 North Central (4-0) will put its best start in years on the line when it hosts No. 1 Forest Park (4-0). This will be the second consecutive year the two schools have faced each other. The Trojans coasted 49-14 in last year's matchup, though that means little now.

No. 2 North Dickinson (4-0) is set to travel to Bark River-Harris (1-3) this week. The Broncos also pulled off a nice upset in Week 4 in a 34-6 dismantling of Gwinn, a loss that Modeltowners coach Darren Sinnaeve called "...the worst defeat I've ever had in 29 years of coaching football as far as disappointment goes."

The Nordics certainly have heard the news and likely won't be caught off guard by the Broncos, who have played better than their record all season long.

Expect No. 4 St. Ignace (3-1) to have its hands full when it travels to face Sault High (2-2) this week. The Blue Devils were close to upsetting Marquette and have played tough football this season.

In the Eight-Man poll, No. 1 Rapid River (4-0) head to Engadine this week to face the Eagles (1-3) for the second time in this young season. Their first meeting was a 54-28 victory in Week 3.

No. 2 Cedarville (4-0) is set to host Superior Central (1-2). On the horizon for Week 6 is the anticipated matchup between the two schools.
