Just fluttering by: Butterflies on migration

September 12, 2013
Daily Press
Monarchs migrating south rest on cedar trees at Peninsula Point Lighthouse on the tip of Stonington Peninsula last weekend. On their journey north each spring, the butterflies lay eggs at the point. In the early fall, the monarchs stop over again on their way to winter in Mexico. This year’s migration was significantly down in numbers because of the cold spring, which kept the butterflies from going north, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
