Alfred J. Cayia Jr.

MANISTIQUE - Alfred J. Cayia Jr., 88, of 364 Lake St., Manistique, passed away on Sept. 5, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born April 23, 1925, in Wakefield, Mich., the son of Alfred and Rachel (Charron) Cayia Sr. and moved to Manistique in 1929. He was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1943.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and piloted B-24 and B-29 bombers.

Following military service, he continued his education at the University of Michigan, graduating with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1950. He was also a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.

On Aug. 4, 1951, he married the former Roma Conces in East Chicago, Ind. They moved to Manistique in 1953 and raised their family there.

Fred worked for the Inland Steel Company in various capacities and retired in 1983 after 33 years of service. At the time of his retirement he was manager of the Inland Lime & Stone Company Division.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique, the Manistique Elks Club, the Indian Lake Golf and Country Club, the Manistique Knight of Columbus 3rd degree Council 2026, and the Donald E. Messier 4th Degree Assembly 502.

Active in the community, Fred served on the Manistique City Council for approximately 10 years and was a former member of the Housing Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Harbor Commission. He was also a member of the Schoolcraft County Building Authority for approximately 30 years and served as chairman during the construction of the current Schoolcraft County Courthouse and Administration Building.

Fred was a long-time director of the First Northern Bank and Trust and the First Manistique Corp. (successor entities of the First National Bank of Manistique). He retired in 1994 as vice chairman of the Board of Directors for both corporations.

In 1995, Fred was selected to serve as a member of the Regional Advisory Council for Marquette General Hospital.

Fred is survived by his wife, Roma Cayia of Manistique; his children, Alfred (Holly) Cayia III of Madison, Miss., Robert (Trish Forstner) Cayia of Valparaiso, Ind., Thomas (Laurie) Cayia of Bexley, Ohio, Beth (Darrin) Drollinger of Stevensville, Mich., and David (Beth) Cayia of Milford, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Cayia; and his sisters, Helen Rowe, Jane Zried and Mary Dean.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Parish Liturgical Prayers will be said at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 13, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique, followed by a luncheon at the St. Francis de Sales parish center.

Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Francis de Sales School Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association.
