Animal shelter fundraiser coming up

ESCANABA - For its third year, the Delta Animal Shelter is partnering with Ernie's Irish Pub for its upcoming annual fundraiser.

"Ernie's Irish Pub Has Gone to the Cats and Dogs" will take place Sept. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ernie's.

The $10 admission fee to the event enters attendees into a drawing for one of two door prizes: three-hour limousine service provided by Heritage Limousine or one dinner a month for a year courtesy of Crispigna's Restaurant.

The first 125 people attending the fundraiser will get to choose a gift for themselves or their pet valued at $10. Snacks at the event are provided courtesy of Applewood Eatery & Espresso Bar, coming soon to Ludington Street.

There will also be animal crackers and puppy chow treats for all in attendance.

"One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Delta Animal Shelter, because we are totally self-funded now," explained Barbara Tardiff, event co-chair. "We do not receive any money from any government agency. We just depend on the kindness of the community."

Shelter officials will also be selling Delta Animal Shelter t-shirts and other products at the event, and some adoptable cats and kittens from the shelter will also be displayed.

Tardiff and event co-chair Heather DeGrave-Kell encourage people to visit Ernie's from now until the fundraiser where for $1 per vote they can choose which animal species is truly man's best friend - cats or dogs. Each voter then gets to display their pet's name or their own name around the bar area. The votes will be counted and the results revealed during the fundraiser.

"The bar maids get incentive too because the bar maids sign the back of the voting cards and whichever bar maid sells the most is going to get a free gift," said Tardiff.

Organizers are hoping the event will match or surpass the success of its first year after last year's event yielded a lower turnout. The goal this year was to make sure there were not other conflicting events happening on the same date.

"We were very, very careful when we picked this date and we think it's a good day," said DeGrave-Kell. "A lot of times people are gearing up to go have fun on Thursdays."

Both DeGrave-Kell and Tardiff credited Todd Beauchamp of UPCars.com for helping to spearhead the efforts in planning the event. Sponsors of the fundraiser include U.P. PC Repair, Celebrations DJ Service, the Daily Press, Radio Results Network, Delta County Credit Union, The Ritz Salon, Dog House, Fashion Lane, Mel's Lawn Garden and Feed Center, and Bink's Coca-Cola.
