ROCK - The Grand Marshal in this year's Rock Labor Day Parade is a perfect example of "a small town boy done good."
Frank Salmi, 73, is a life-long resident of Rock who served in the Navy, worked hard for a living, has contributed years to his community, and is now enjoying a deserved retirement spending time with family and friends.
Following his tour in the U.S. Navy, Salmi worked at Harnischfeger in Escanaba and Lakeshore Industries in Marquette before serving as Rock's rural mail carrier for more than a decade. He says retirement is the greatest employment yet.
"It's the best job and I quit looking," he commented from his seat along the midway behind the Rock Lions Club.
Prior to getting married to the former Lorraine Smith in 1962, Salmi served in the U.S. Navy. He joined the service at age 17, just a couple days after his high school graduation from Rock. From 1958-61, the small town boy traveled the global waters.
"I can honestly say I joined the Navy to see the world and I did," he said with a proud grin.
Salmi saw much of the Mediterranean area. He traveled to England, Scotland, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Canary Islands, Cuba, and the Virgin Islands.
Frank and Lorraine have two grown children, Kevin and Carrie, and are grandparents to three granddaughters.
In addition to enjoying retirement and life with his family, Salmi is an active member of Rock American Legion Post 559. He is also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins and is a former member of the Rock Lions Club.
