COOKS - Longtime Gooseneck Lake resident, Wayne W. Buchan, 91, of Cooks, Mich., died Aug. 25, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
He was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Jackson, Mich., the son of Donald and Ivah (Van Horn) Buchan. He attended schools in Grand Rapids and Jackson, Mich., and was a graduate of the Central High School in Fort Wayne, Ind., with the Class of 1941.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, seeing duty in North Africa and Italy.
In 1976 he married Charlotte "Bobbie" Braughton-Baird in Manistique and they made their home at Gooseneck Lake. Bobbie preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 2000.
Wayne was employed as a passenger and freight conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Amtrak and Con Rail until his retirement in February of 1982.
He had lived most of his life in Columbus and West Jefferson, Ohio, moving to the Manistique area in May of 1982.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Cooks, the American Legion Franklin Post 1 in Columbus, Ohio, Lakeside Lodge 371 F. & A.M. of Manistique and the Nahma Golf Course. He had served on the Big Bay de Noc School Board for 16 years, the Schoolcraft Delta Intermediate School Board for 12 years and taught pre-school at the Big Bay de Noc School for 11 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Kim (Michael) Foley of Hilliard, Ohio; son, Wayne (Melissa) Buchan II, of Petersburg, Va.; stepsons, Michael (Rebecca) Baird of Columbus, Ohio, John (Pam) Baird of Batavia, Ohio, and Tim (Sally) Baird of Sardinia, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ken; and a sister, Joyce.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the New Garden Cemetery in Garden Township with Pastor Lon Hider officiating.
Burial will be held in the New Garden Cemetery at Garden Township.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Big Bay de Noc Scholarship Foundation.
