Area celebrates Labor Day

Communities in Schoolcraft and Delta counties will be hosting Labor Day festivals filled with a variety of activities for all ages this weekend.

In Schoolcraft County, the Kewadin Casino Labor Day Weekend Car Show takes place Friday. The Manistique Merchants Car Show will be Saturday. Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce will also host a motorcycle show in Manistique on Saturday.

In Delta County, the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine 38th Annual Show will run Saturday through Monday in Escanaba.

Preview night is Friday. Rock will be celebrating its 70th annual Labor Day festival on Saturday while Nahma will host its annual Labor Day celebration on Sunday.

KEWADIN CASINO CAR SHOW - FRIDAY

The Kewadin Casino Labor Day Weekend Car Show will begin with a cruise Friday. Participants will line up at 6 p.m. at the Lakeshore Shell station. The cruise will travel through Manistique and continue east to the Kewadin Casino where the car show will be held. There will be trophies and cash prizes awarded.

MANISTIQUE MERCHANTS CAR SHOW - SATURDAY

The Manistique Merchants Car Show will be downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Vehicle registration begins at 8 a.m. at Floyd's Family Restaurant. The first 180 registrants will receive dash plaques and Kewadin Casino packages.

Other activities planned throughout the day include a kids tractor pull and a contest to see how long a car will run with the oil removed. There will be several food vendors including barbecued chicken.

An arts and craft fair will be held in conjunction with the annual car show. Space is available for $15 a booth which will be donated to Schoolcraft County Dare Program. For more information about the arts and craft fair, contact Dan Barber at (906) 341-5082.

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MOTORCYCLE SHOW - SATURDAY

Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce Motorcycle Show will also take place in Manistique on Saturday. There is a $10 entry fee with goodie bags going to the first 50 bikes registered.

Awards will be given in four categories for people's choice and longest distance ridden. There will be a poker run after the show.

U.P. STEAM AND GAS ENGINE SHOW - SATURDAY-MONDAY (FRIDAY PREVIEW)

The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine 38th Annual Show takes place at the Antique Village on the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds in Escanaba on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Preview day is Friday.

The annual show will feature fly-wheel-type stationary engines. A variety of outdoor exhibits will be available to the public including steam engines and gasoline engines. The agriculture museum will be open. A steam-powered sawmill, model railroad museum, and ham radio museum will be in operation.

The shops in the village will also be open and include the general store, candle shop, barbershop, quilt shop, cook shack, woodcarving, pottery shop, yarn shop, and ice cream parlor.

A huge flea market and a knife and gun show will also be held on the grounds.

Admission to the steam and gas show is $5 for adults. Children under 14 and exhibitors have free admission.

ROCK LABOR DAY FESTIVAL - SATURDAY

Saturday's activities in Rock include a parade at noon. Entrants are encouraged to reflect the theme for the parade which is "Remember the 70s."

There will be prizes awarded in several categories including $200 to the first-place float provided by the Rock Lions Club which sponsors the annual festival.

Throughout the day along the midway - located behind the Rock Lions Club on M-35 - there will be games, concessions and bounce houses. Contests include cow pie bingo, a kids tractor pull, and a horseshoe competition.

A craft sale and flea market will also take place on the grounds. Bingo begins at 1 p.m. in the clubhouse. Live music will be provided throughout the day. The Lions Club will be selling its annual raffle tickets with a first-place prize of $400.

The Labor Day festival is the local Lions Club's major fundraiser of the year with profits going back into the community and other projects supported by the organization. For more information about the parade or the craft sale/flea market, contact Kathy at (906) 356-6203.

NAHMA LABOR DAY CELEBRATION - SUNDAY

Nahma's Labor Day celebration begins with a parade at 11 a.m. Sunday. For more information about entering the parade, call CIndy at (906) 420-1790.

Activities throughout the day - including music, games, concessions, and bounce houses - will be held at the township hall.

There will also be crafts available. A pie-eating contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. The 6th Annual Hot Rod/Classic Car Show will also take place on the grounds. A raffle drawing will start around 6 p.m. with the top prize of $1,000.
