REPUBLIC TOWNSHIP - A Wisconsin man was seriously injured in an accidental explosion Saturday in Republic Township.

Marquette County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at 1:28 p.m. of a man injured while mixing chemicals together from a product called Tannerite.

John Groschopf, 60, of Bristol, Wis., was injured when the chemicals he mixed together exploded in his hands, causing severe injury.

Groschopf was in a gravel pit near Chief Lake at the time of the incident. Two juvenile males who were target shooting with firearms were in close proximity when the explosion occurred.

According to a press release from State Police at Negaunee, Groschopf was standing near his ORV mixing the chemicals with his hands when the explosion occurred, causing serious injury to his hands and torso.

One of the juvenile males received injury to his ears due to the loud blast. The other was wearing ear protection at the time and was not injured. Both juveniles transported Groschopf in the ORV from the gravel pit to an ambulance from Bell Memorial Hospital waiting on the Fence River Road. Groschopf was transported to Marquette General Hospital.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post investigated the incident and determined it was accidental.
