William Richard Helland Sr.

GLADSTONE - William Richard Helland Sr., 85, of Gladstone, passed away early Saturday evening, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

Bill was born Oct. 21, 1927, in Manistique, the son of Arnold and Emma (Martinson) Lindquist. Bill was raised in Manistique until age 14, at which time, he and his family relocated to Hastings, Neb., where Bill continued his education and graduated from the Hastings Schools. Following graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a medic, throughout the end of World War II and the Korean War, from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1953.

Bill was employed at Los Alamos National Laboratory as an engineer technician in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He returned to Gladstone in 1999, following his retirement. On Oct. 20, 2000, Bill was united in marriage to the former Lucy Hurkmans in Escanaba and together the couple made their home in Gladstone.

Bill was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. He was a very talented woodworker and was proud to have made hundreds of detailed wooden toys throughout his life. Many of Bill's toys were given as gifts to his family or donated to the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots program.

In addition to his loving wife Lucy, Bill is survived by: sons, William (Karen) Helland Jr. of Whittier, Calif., Gregory (Carolyn) Helland of Los Alamos, N.M., Rodney (Linda) Phillips of Gladstone, Mich., Bill (Eileen) Phillips of Brampton, Mich., Raymond (Bonnie) Phillips of Escanaba, Mich.; daughters, Christina (Mike) Bernardin of Los Alamos, N.M., Brenda Carter of Albuquerque, N.M., Dawn (Arland) LaVigne of Gladstone, Mich.; brother, Milton (Rita) Lindquist of Gladstone, Mich. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Emma; son, Richard Phillips; daughter-in-law, Ruth Phillips.

Bill's family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12 to 1:45 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites will follow visitation, at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday and will be conducted by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Bill Helland will follow military rites at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Skradski Funeral Home with Pastor Peggy Rose of the First Lutheran Church officiating. Luncheon will follow at the First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Gladstone. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting Bill's family with arrangements.
