MANISTIQUE - No injuries were reported in a paper mill fire early this morning in Manistique.
Manistique Public Safety and volunteer firefighters responded to a fire in the paper machine on the second floor of the FutureMark Papers building, 453 S. Mackinac St., at 3:59 a.m. today.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers determined the fire was confined within a vent above the machine, according to a press release from Manistique Public Safety. Firefighters accessed the roof and extinguished the fire, which had been initially fought and contained by paper mill personnel.
The fire resulted in substantial damage to the roof vent and roof fan, though the paper machine received minimal damage. Officers remained on scene for several hours venting heat from the building and extinguishing hot spots, returning to the station at 6:30 a.m..
Assisting firefighters were members from the Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department and paper mill employees.
