MANISTIQUE - Baritone Roger Chard and concert pianist Maurita Peterson Holland will offer an evening of show tunes on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Manistique Public Library. Tickets for the concert, a fundraiser for the Lake Effect Community Arts Center, are $15 per person.
The performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will include approximately one and a half hours of music sure to appeal to all ages, followed by a reception with the artists and refreshments.
Giannine Perigo of the Lake Effect Arts group said that tickets are available in Manistique at the Mustard Seed and the Lake Effect Art Gallery at Traders Point. Lake Effect Arts President Sue Robishaw said, "We are so appreciative of Roger and Maurita's generosity and support for our organization. This is the second year in a row that they have contributed their time and immense talents to assist our fledgling arts group."
Gulliver native Holland graduated from Manistique High School and attended the University of Michigan studying music, computers and information science. She is a U of M associate professor emerita of information.
Holland also earned bachelors and masters degrees in music from U of M. A frequent piano accompanist and performer in the Ann Arbor area, she is also active in the Detroit area Swedish-American community, playing Scandinavian music on her accordion. The musician was also a member of the Ann Arbor Adult Flute ensemble.
A retired real estate attorney, Chard grew up in Lansing and attended the Michigan School for the Blind. He practiced law for more than 37 years in the Ann Arbor area. In addition to his frequent performances in Ann Arbor with Holland, the baritone has soloed regularly with the Ann Arbor Cantata singers and performed with Dave Brubeck, at the American Wind Symphony Orchestra in Manistique and with orchestras and choruses in Ann Arbor, Toledo, Grand Rapids, Flint and Holland. He plays the piano and the French horn as well.
The non-profit Lake Effect Community Arts Center was created by a group of artists and other interested residents to encourage and nurture the arts in the Schoolcraft County area. It supports and facilitates participation in visual arts, music, theater, and dance by offering classes, workshops, exhibits, public performances, sales gallery and related services. Memberships are available in this arts organization are $35 a year.
