LaCROSSE, Wis. - Thirty women from across the Upper Peninsula and Western Wisconsin were among the more than 1,756 registered persons who attended the 50th annual Lutheran Women's Missionary Society (LWMS) International Convention held in LaCrosse, Wis., in late June. A $2,000 grant was received from Thrivent for Lutherans to help defray the cost of the bus trip.

Attending from Escanaba, Powers, and Hyde were Linda Robinson, Jan Baker, Lorrie Flath, Camille Blakeslee, Ruth Carlson, Gail Maxwell, Deb Peterson, Helen Herbst and Sally Gustafson.

LaCrosse is the town where it all began 50 years ago. Members from over 880 Wisconsin Evangelical Synod (WELS) and Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) congregations meet yearly at the international convention for mission support, spiritual renewal, inspiration, and fellowship.

Thirty women from across the Upper Peninsula and western Wisconsin attended the 50th annual Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) International Convention. Area women represented Lutheran churches in Escanaba, Hyde and Powers.

The theme of the convention was "Like a Tree Planted by Streams of Water." Attendees were provided opportunities to meet missionaries and heard first-hand about the work being done in Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, Africa, Haiti, and the Hmongs in Minnesota. Other highlights of the convention included Bible studies, and the presentation of over $75,221.36 to WELS Home and World Mission projects and a variety of mission displays.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the organization, the women were treated to a special LWMS historical museum, an original Saturday evening skit, and the sight of theme banners that were featured at prior conventions. The group also welcomed 478 new convention attendees from the Send One Sister challenge which encouraged local circuits to sponsor at least one of their members to travel to the convention. The Lake Superior Circuit sponsored five.

The 51st annual LWMS Convention will be held in Dallas, Texas, June 23-26, 2014, and will be hosted by the Red River Circuit. The theme is "You Will Be My Witness" based on Acts 1:18.
