The Gladstone Fan Club presents a check for the first installment toward the new Gladstone softball field to Gladstone high school superintendent Jay Kulbertis, Wednesday. Pictured from left to right is Kulbertis, Fan Club president Jill Thompson, Fan Club vice president Bill Buchmiller, and Al Verbrigghe.
Buchmiller said that they would like to thank the school for allowing the Fan Club to borrow the money through them for the field, as well as Matt Houle, who lined up the city and got them city equipment to use in the construction. They also want to thank City Operator Barry Lund for giving his time free of charge and his permission to use the equipment, and U.P. Power, who donated their truck to install the scoreboard. He said that Verbrigghe, Steve Kowalski, Jeff Depuydt, John Nevala, Rod Wells, and a few others did the majority of the work on the project, and that Gerry Smith was also a tremendous help to the process.
“But without the school financing, we might never have done it through the fan club,” he said. Buchmiller also stressed that people should be aware of where the Fan Club money is dispursed to. It is used for things such as bleachers at the school, equipment at the weight training facility and the track, giving money to athletes for banquets and trips downstate if needed, and other areas where it is needed.
