MANISTIQUE - Police continue to investigate the source of a mercury spill found outside a downtown apartment in Manistique Monday evening, according to Manistique Public Safety.

Police and health officials investigated and analyzed a suspect liquid, which was confirmed to be mercury. An employee of a tenant business had found the liquid at a common entrance for the business' upstairs apartment, said police.

Public Safety immediately closed off the area and with the assistance of the city's Department Of Public Works, constructed a containment berm around the liquid.

The LMAS District Health Department arranged for analytical equipment to be brought to the site and the suspect liquid was confirmed to be mercury, said police.

There were no injuries. Police and health officials say there is no additional risk to the public. A private firm will clean up the site.

Agencies assisting in the response also included Schoolcraft County Emergency Management, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
