ESCANABA - Gladstone High School graduate Kyle Arvan achieved a major milestone while winning the 12th Annual Escanaba Lighthouse five-kilometer run at Ludington Park Saturday.

Arvan, who now lives in Green Bay, covered the 3.1-mile course in personal-best 16 minutes, 52 seconds. He was followed by Eric Cousineau of Escanaba (18:01) and Andrew Stenberg, also of Escanaba (18:11).

"This is the first time I've broken 17 minutes," said Arvan. "I've been doing basically five miles a day and a lot of tempo workouts, which for me is about 5:50 per mile. It was a little warm on the course, but we had a nice breeze on the way back which helped cool us down."

Susan Grondin of Iron Mountain copped the women's title at 21:09, five seconds better than Escanaba High School junior Isabelle Wellman. Courtney Jarema of downstate Brighton took third (22:43).

"I had one girl (Wellman) who passed me at about the halfway point," said Grondin. "I just tried to stay with her, and I think my experience may have helped me in the end. This was a beautiful day on a nice, flat course."

The event, held under sunny, warm and humid conditions, drew a record 201 runners and walkers.
