GLADSTONE - Kyle Arvan took charge early in Thursday's Firecracker five-mile run, winning in 29 minutes, 32 seconds.
The 2012 Gladstone High School graduate was followed by Frank Crossman of Rapid River (30:38), women's champion Becky Hebert of Tinley Park, Ill. (30:53) and Joey Wolfe of Escanaba (31:47).
"I wanted to run in the 28s," said Arvan. "I started pretty good and had 14:20 and the halfway point. I was right on target. I really had no one to push and I kind of lost focus."
Arvan, who ran cross country at Capital College in Columbus, Oh. last fall, will not be returning to the team this year.
"It just wasn't fun anymore," said Arvan, who plans to run in the Columbus Marathon this fall. "I'm now more into marathons."
Rapid River High School graduate Sara Rohde, now living in Green Bay, was women's runner-up (31:50). Kate Johnson of Lansing placed third (35:00).
