MANISTIQUE - Robert "Bob" Victor Kanerva, 86, of Glenwood Drive, Manistique, passed away Saturday morning, June 29, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.
Bob was born on Aug. 31, 1926, in Covington, Mich., the son of Victor and Aino (Mattson) Kanerva.
Bob attended grade school in Covington and L'Anse, graduating from Gravaret High School in Marquette in 1944. He then attended the Business Institute in Milwaukee until joining the Army in 1945. As Staff Sergeant, he served in the Army headquarters at Fort McClellan, Ala., until World War II ended. In 1949, he graduated from Northern Michigan University with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration.

On June 10, 1950, he married Sigrid L. Nelson at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. They raised their family in the Manistique area.
After having taught business subjects in Cedarville and Charlevoix, Mich., Robert joined the teaching staff at Manistique High School. Completing 38 years as a business teacher, Robert retired in 1987 from the Manistique Area Schools.
Robert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Lutheran Brotherhood, The State American Legion, Life Member of The National Rifle Association, a life member of both the State and Schoolcraft County Chapter of MARSP (where he served as treasurer for 13 years and served as their Assistant Area Director and Area Director). He also served on the State Finance committee for MARSP in Lansing for several years. Robert was a realtor salesman for State Wide Agency and a past Toastmaster.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Robert loved the outdoors and his hunting dogs, (especially his Springer Spaniels). He loved reading outdoor magazines, listening to the national and local news and "Finland Calling" on TV. He also enjoyed carpentry and blacksmith projects, too!
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Sigrid; his daughter, Sheryl Babladelis of Indianapolis, Ind., his son, Robert (Sue) Kanerva of Milford, Mich.; grandchildren, Rob and Nikki Babladelis, Jackie and Eric Kanerva; and great-grandson, Ethan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mrs. Glenn (Ruth) Davis.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m., on Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral Services will follow at 1 p.m., in the funeral home, with Pastor Eleanor Russey officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique.
