ESCANABA - A zoning reclassification request for the former Dells Supper Club property in Wells Township has been approved by the Delta County Board of Commissioners. The action was taken during a meeting Tuesday night.
According to Delta County Building and Zoning Administrator Dan Menacher, James Cousineau and John Mathias applied for the zoning reclassification of the current Residential 1 and Commercial 1 district to a Town Development district.
The reclassification request for the property, located at 3765 U.S. 2 & 41 in Wells Township, was approved by the Planning Commission at a meeting Monday.
"The property owners are the current owners of the Mobile Wrench which is located in Escanaba right now," explained Menacher.
John and Nicole Mathias plan to use the property to move the Mobile Wrench from Escanaba to this new location due to space limitations in their current location. The company has been in business since 2004.
According to their plans for the project, the Mathiases are hoping to construct a 60-by-80 foot truck repair facility with two operating bays and an office and parts room inside the facility. The existing driveway on U.S. 2 & 41 would be used as the entrance and exit. Their goal is to relocate to the new property within the next year.
The plans also indicate the Mathias' interest in building a home on the back side of the property facing Old State Road.
According to Menacher, the project will require a conditional use permit.
"That's why the expediting of this is being done here real quick to get them moving along," he said. "We fielded a few phone calls from the neighbors. There's no opposition. Nobody showed any controversy to this whatsoever."
The board unanimously approved the zoning reclassification request.
