CORNELL - Four kayakers who capsized on the Escanaba River are safe and sound after two made it to shore on their own and the others were rescued, said a Delta County Sheriff news release.

At 9:08 p.m. Friday, a caller notified 9-1-1 that four people kayaking near Boney Falls had capsized; two made it to shore but two others were still in the water.

When police arrived on the scene, they located the two distressed kayakers stuck in rapids south of the Boney Falls Dam, according to the news release.

Using swift water rescue equipment, the Delta County Search and Rescue Team brought a 21-year-old Bark River man and a 19-year-old Escanaba woman to safety. The two were treated at the scene and released.

The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post, Rampart Emergency Medical Services, Rock EMS, and Gladstone Public Safety with its hovercraft.
