ESCANABA - An Escanaba couple accused of torturing and sexually abusing a boy for four years waived their right to have a preliminary examination in Delta County District Court today, automatically forwarding charges to circuit court.

Susan Marie Bardo, 46, and her boyfriend, Carl James Pellinen, 47, were each arrested in April for alleged first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture of Bardo's 15-year-old son. The alleged acts occurred for four years at their Escanaba residence.

By waiving their preliminary examination today, the defendants may make a plea or go to trial in circuit court.

At the request of a relative of the boy, Escanaba Public Safety went to the home to check on the boy's welfare on April 12. Police found the teen living upstairs in an 8-by-10-foot room made out of tarps.

Following investigation, Pellinen and Bardo were each arrested that day for first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture - each a life felony.

Since their arrests, the teen has been under the care of Child Protective Services.

Pellinen and Bardo remain lodged in Delta County Jail without bond.
