ESCANABA - Discussion began Thursday on how to go about filling a vacancy on Escanaba City Council due to the death of council member Brady Nelson earlier this week.

Thursday's regular council meeting began with a moment of silence in honor of Nelson who passed away at the age of 59 from lung cancer Saturday. Condolences were expressed to his family.

Nelson was elected to council in November 2007 and was serving his second term on the board. Council will appoint someone to fill the vacant seat until the November election.

A special council meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday when council will discuss the process to appoint someone.

Any Escanaba citizen interested in the temporary appointment is asked to call the city clerk's office at 786-1194 or the city manager's office at 786-9402.

Individuals seeking to be elected to fill the remaining two years on the term must file by Aug. 13 to be on the November ballot.

In addition, three council terms will be expiring this year. The four-year terms expiring are held by Pete Baker, Pat Baribeau and Leo Evans.
