GERMFASK - Two overdue canoeists were found safe and sound Wednesday, according to the Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of two overdue canoeists at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The two canoeists were reported to have launched their canoe in the Manistique River in Germfask at noon.
They were expected at their destination no later than 5 p.m.
After failing to make cellphone contact with the canoeists, deputies contacted the Coast Guard at 11:45 p.m. to have a rescue helicopter deployed. The helicopter arrived on scene at 2:20 a.m. and by 2:37 a.m. the canoeists had been located on the northern bank of the Manistique River where the Fox River connects, where they had built a fire.
Officers checked the subjects for exposure, and it was determined that they did not require medical assistance. The canoeists were then transported to their vehicles by officers.
