ESCANABA - The Delta County Board of Commissioners has voted to move one step closer to constructing a new pavilion in one of its county parks.
The board adopted a resolution to accept $50,000 from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant for the construction of the pavilion at Pioneer Trail Park. The action was taken during Tuesday's county board meeting.
"It's not the 75 percent we would like to see, but it's 42 percent of the actual dollars," explained Rory Mattson, executive director of the Delta Conservation District.
Mattson said the county will guarantee, per the resolution, to cover the other $70,000 toward the project.
He suggested the DCD borrow $50,000 from the county for this remaining portion, since they have not borrowed the full $200,000 the board approved lending them for improvements to county park infrastructure in early 2012.
"We didn't borrow the full $200,000 so there's $50,000 in there and then we believe we can come up with the other part," said Mattson, noting his desire to meet with the board during a committee of the whole meeting to further discuss funding.
According to a description of projects awarded through the DNR Trust Fund on their website, the pavilion at Pioneer Trail Park will be enclosed for winter use, but will incorporate side doors to allow users to open them during the summer months if desired.
Commissioner Dave Rivard thanked Mattson, the park staff, and all those who have contributed toward improving the parks system and spreading the news of park improvements over the past few years.
Board Vice-chair Mary Harrington agreed, noting she recently camped at Fuller Park and heard only positive comments about the county parks system.
The board unanimously approved adopting the resolution to accept the $50,000 DNR Trust Fund grant, 4 votes to 0, with Commissioner Dave Moyle absent from the meeting.
In other business, the board:
