ESCANABA - A 19-year-old Escanaba man was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison on one count of criminal sexual conduct. The judgment was handed down in Delta County Circuit Court on Wednesday.
Tyler Benjamin Sanders, 19, allegedly engaged in sexual penetration with a female under 13 years of age on Dec. 27, 2012, in Escanaba, according to court records.
During Sanders' sentencing Wednesday, he was ordered to spend three to 15 years in prison. He was given credit for 117 days served in the county jail. He was also ordered to pay $198 in fines and costs.
Prior to sentencing, Judge Stephen Davis stated that two lives - the victim's and Sanders' - have been impacted by the defendant's actions.
Davis ruled Sanders is to have no contact with the victim or anyone 17 years old or younger. He must also register as a sexual offender.
Sanders was originally charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct (person under 13 years of age), a life felony, and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct (person 13-15 years old), a 15-year felony.
On April 25, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in exchange for the dismissal of the life felony.
