Fun Run is more than a good time

Today marks the start of an event that is much anticipated in Escanaba every year. For the 28th year, the Krusin Klassics Fun Run will take place here. For many residents, the event marks the beginning of summer as much as Memorial Day. Whether you are a car enthusiast or not, Fun Run has become a staple in Escanaba.

Krusin Klassics brings a fun weekend to Escanaba each year, but its impact to the area is far greater than meets they eye. This event draws loads of people to the area year after year. Just look at the number of vintage cars taking part in tonight's Krusin Klassics Fun Run parade from Escanaba to Kipling and back. Each one of those participants, along with their friends and family, will spend money in the local area this weekend. Businesses such as hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations and more will benefit. That infusion of cash, in turn, will give a boost to the local economy.

The economic impact is significant and is likely one that local merchants anticipate each year.

The event also brings people to downtown Escanaba. There has never been a year when there has been a small crowd for a Krusin Klassics parade - rain or shine. Tonight's parade should be no different.

Krusin Klassics also gives back to the community. The group makes numerous donations to area groups and causes throughout the year such as Walk for Warmth and the Salvation Army. They also spread holiday cheer to needy families during the holidays and sponsor scholarships for automotive students at Bay College. These are only some of the ways the group helps the community.

The group has a fun weekend ahead. The parade will start at 7 p.m. tonight at Ludington Park, travel to Kipling, and end up at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Fun Run activities will take place Saturday at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Buttons are $5 for adults and and children under 12 are admitted free. Gates open for the all-day event at 7 a.m. While you're there, buy some raffle tickets for a chance to win the 2013 raffle car - a 1971 Chevelle.

Krusin Klassics is an exceptional group that has helped the community in a number of ways. Support them when you can. You will be helping a group that believes in helping the area we call home.
